I have completed two afghans for my oldest nieces! The first Afghan is crocheted, granny square for my niece M. She originally wanted an afghan which had been made by her Nana‘s grandmother, which would have been her great, great grandmother!  Obviously my mom was not willing to allow a college student to take that to live in a dorm.  I offered to crochet her a granny square afghan.

Niece M decided on the size – 50in x 60in.  I did the math: 8 about six inch squares across and 9 about six inch squares down means 72 mostly six inch crocheted granny squares.

I used a variety of colors and shades from my existing worsted yarn stash. Nana bought two skeins to be used in the project – two skeins of Vanna’s Choice in the exact shade of aqua which is niece M’s favorite color, and one Pound of Love in milk chocolate to tie all the squares together.

I am pleased with how it turned out:

Having crocheted one niece a granny square afghan, I then committed to crocheting and knitting all the nieces and nephews afghans. I have a nephew and two nieces on each side of my family tree, for a total need of six hand knitted or hand crocheted afghans. I knew from the get that this was a long-term project! I am completing one entire side of the family rather than hopping from side to side

Next up was niece S and what I think of as the All Things Pink afghan.  Niece S is the younger sister of niece M and I try very hard to keep it balanced between them. She and I settled on a four patch block and solid block design:

Niece S is a bit taller than both niece M and myself so her afghan size was 50in x 70in afghan.  The Math – 72 about five inch blocks and 17 ten inch blocks.

Niece S choose pink, grey and white as her afghan colors.  I was confident I had enough grey and white. I did not have three entire skeins of distinct pink shades, so Nana bought one skein of Vanna’s Choice in two different pink shades and one Pound of Love in White to tie it together (and keep the money equal.)

I am plotting the colors for nephew T’s afghan…
